WHAT IS EXISTENTIAL PSYCHOTHERAPY?

Existential Psychotherapy is centred upon supporting you to make sense of life through the willingness to face it and its problems. The existentialist belief is that life has no essential or predetermined meaning, the individual is entirely free and ultimately responsible, so meaning has to be found or created.

Existential psychotherapy does not dwell on the past, but uses the past experience as a tool to promote freedom and newfound assertiveness. Feeling unmotivated and confused about our life’s purpose can be frustrating and exhausting. By gaining control over your direction in life, you are able to design the course of your choosing. This creates a sense of liberation and allows you to let go of the sadness and anxiety associated.

This form of psychotherapy involves teaching you to grow and embrace your life as it exists with wonder and curiosity. You will be supported in living more authentically and purposefully, whilst accepting the limitations and contradictions of what it is to be human. By doing so, you are able to view your life experience as a journey rather than a trial.

In existential therapy, the human relationship between you and your therapist takes precedence over psychological structure, and is the basic healing factor in any psychotherapy.

Existential psychotherapy is concerned with more deeply comprehending and alleviating as much as possible symptoms such as anxiety, apathy, alienation, avoidance, shame, depression, guilt, anger and resentment as well as promoting meaningful, life-enhancing experiences of relationships, love, caring, commitment, courage, creativity, spirituality, self-actualization, authenticity and acceptance.
