What is Neurodiversity?

Neurodiversity-informed counselling recognizes, embraces and values differences in development and functioning. Autism (ASD), attention, focus and hyperactivity (ADD/ADHD), and other examples, are part of a normal range of human diversity. Our therapists focus on understanding and respecting our clients unique strengths, challenges and experiences. We make room for our clients unique thinking and learning needs. Together, we may explore your identity, develop greater self-acceptance or navigate challenges with different social landscapes (community groups, school, work).

  • Exploring and understanding neurocognitive differences and how they impact thoughts, emotions and behaviours
  • Navigating relationships, social interactions, maintaining friendships and understanding social cues or norms
  • Developing strategies for time management, organizing tasks, or setting goals, priorities and plans
  • Processing sensory sensitivities to noise, light, touch or textures
  • Understanding, regulating, transitioning between and expanding on emotions
  • Communication and expressing thoughts and ideas clearly, understanding nonverbal cues or challenges with writing or speaking
  • Unpacking learning, studying or focusing difficulties and navigating workplace expectations
  • Building self-advocacy skills and communicating accommodation needs, preferences or boundaries
  • Coping with big life changes and transitions like starting a new job or attending a new grade or level in school

  1. At Bliss, we believe your counselling should be as unique as you are. We’ll begin by getting you matched with a therapist who specializes in your specific cognitive profile!
  2. Then, you’ll get started with your initial session. During this appointment (virtual or in-person, your pick), you will share more about your experiences, thoughts, emotions, behaviours and relationships. You’ll leave with a better sense of your goals and applicable tools and strategies that will get you there!
  3. From here, you and your therapist will co-create a custom path, where you will receive valuable guidance and support! With an understanding expert by your side, you’ll learn to embrace your strengths and to navigate challenges with confidence!
  4. Sometimes the exploration of neurodiversity may prompt further evaluation or assessment. You may be encouraged to see a qualified professional who specializes in assessments. Your therapist will work with you to better understand your experiences and tailor your sessions with techniques and approaches that will meet your learning needs.
