What is Non-Monogamous Relationship Therapy?

Non-monogamy covers any relationship style that deviates from monogamy, where only two people are committed to being romantically or sexually exclusive. Non-monogamous relationship therapy explores different relationship dynamics and the ever-expanding expression of love and connection. It’s all about re-writing the rules and finding what works best for everyone involved! In any case, the key is open communication, knowledge of all those involved, and clear boundaries to ensure everyone is consenting to the arrangement. Challenges arise in any relationship style! With open communication, trust, empathy, self-reflection and a community of supportive people, you can create harmonious connections.

  1. At Bliss, we believe your counselling should be as unique as you are. We’ll begin by getting you matched with a therapist you can trust.
  2. Then, you’ll get started with your initial session. During this appointment (virtual or in-person, your pick), you will share more about your motivations, expectations and feelings about exploring non-monogamy, polyamory, or with opening your relationship. You’ll leave with a better sense of your relationship boundaries and goals for therapy.
  3. From here, you and your therapist will co-create a custom path for how you may navigate relationship dynamics, negotiate relationship agreements, establish clear boundaries and consent! With an open-minded and nonjudgmental expert by your side, you’ll learn how to build trust and security with multiple connections.
  4. Sometimes the exploration of non-monogamous, polyamorous, and open relationships activate past traumas or attachment wounds. You may be encouraged to address and process these challenges when unresolved issues arise. Your therapist will work with you to co-create strategies that align with your values and boundaries, as well as address your specific needs!
