On the Safe Edge: A Manual for SM Play

Trevor Jacques, Michael Hamilton & Dr. Dale

On The Safe Edge: A Manual For SM Play examines the fantasies involved in sadomasochistic play: Bondage, branding, ritual, whips, roles, chains, leather, marshmallows, etc., challenging the reader to re-examine preconceptions about sadomasochism. The authors, all experts in SM play, dispel the stereotypes and myths about sadomasochism with this introduction to a hitherto hidden world of human expression. Safe Edge is a pan-sexual book structured to answer the questions a novice might have as he or she begins to explore safer SM play, and those of experienced players as they try new ways to play. It provides an understanding of how SM play can be a positive, safe, and healthy expression of sexual fantasies.

About the Author Trevor Jacques, Michael Hamilton & Dr. Dale

Trevor Jacques graduated from the Imperial College of Science and Technology, in London, England with a degree in Physics. He is an Associate of the Royal College of Science and the Institute of Physics. He moved from England to Canada in 1981. He has had a varied career as a field seismologist in England and Africa; avionics, infra-red sensing, and computer systems engineer in England and Canada; and as the director of marketing for a database company in Canada.

In 1991, he and his co-authors of “On The Safe Edge: A Manual For SM Play” designed and delivered a series of SM safety seminars, given under the auspices of the AIDS Committee of Toronto, to further the practice of safer sex. Some 3,500 people have attended the courses in the last ten years.

Mr. Jacques was the principal co-author of “On The Safe Edge,” which became a national best seller in its first year of publication and rapidly rose to become a standard for safety in healthy BDSM play. It’s worth noting here that persistent rumours that “On The Safe Edge” was out of print have been grossly exaggerated; it has been in print continuously since first publication in 1993. For several years, Mr. Jacques was the publisher and editor of “Canada’s Gay Guide.” He has also sponsored the Toronto Pride celebrations for several years.

In March, 1994 and again in January, 1997, Mr. Jacques was honoured with the Pantheon of Leather award for the Canadian Region.

He is frequently invited to talk about SM on television and radio. His appearances include: CBC Television, CityTV, CFTO Television, MuchMusic, The Women’s Television Network, Ryerson Polytechnical University Television, BBC Greater London Radio (England), CBC Radio, Spectrum Radio (England), MVS (Amsterdam, The Netherlands), Q107, and AM640. He is also often interviewed about SM by newspapers and magazines, for example: The Globe and Mail, The Toronto Star, The Toronto Sun, Boudoir Noir, Secret Magazine, Tab Magazine, O Magazine, etc.. He is also published in Checkmate and DungeonMaster magazine and the SandMUtopia Guardian.

Mr. Jacques has presented talks and seminars on a regular basis at the University of Toronto, York University, and Ryerson Polytechnical University. In his travels, he has spoken about SM and health in Toronto, London, New York, and Chicago.

He is also an avid windsurfer and skier. He has led corporate teams to two successive wins in charity running/cycling competitions.
