Adapted from the works of Lori A. Brotto (PhD, R Psych), Rosemary Basson (MD), Jenn Bossio (MSc), Miriam Driscol (MD), and Shauna Correia (MD), our group is designed for men, 18 years of age and older, experiencing situational erectile dysfunction. Whether you are flying solo or with a partner, we’re here to support you in strengthening your mind-body awareness, reconnecting with pleasure, and improving your erections.
Situational erectile dysfunction is often linked to feelings of nervousness and performance anxiety, and does not include lifelong or persistent erectile dysfunction. Research shows that using a blend of Mindfulness and Cognitive Behavioural techniques within a supportive space can empower men to embrace sex as a pleasurable and enjoyable process, rather than a goal-driven activity with a single outcome (i.e., penetration or orgasm). Drawing on Jon Kabat-Zinn’s wisdom, mindfulness is a non-judgemental, present-centered awareness, where every thought, feeling, or sensation that arises is acknowledged and accepted as it arises; our facilitators will create an environment that fosters awareness, change, and compassion. Here you’ll have the opportunity to process your thoughts and feelings, while building new skills that support lifestyle changes and will ultimately contribute to better sexual experiences.
When it comes to our groups, you can come to expect that there will be more than just talk! After each weekly support group, you will be provided with worksheets to support your learning and self-reflection in between groups. Each week we’ll debrief about the take-home exercises and then guide you into the next session with a comforting meditation. At the end of the 5-week group, you will be provided a package of research and book recommendations, ensuring that you’re equipped with the knowledge and skills to boost your sexual confidence and pleasure!
Here’s what we’ll cover over 5 weeks: Week 1: Tuesday, April 23 2024, 7:30-9:00 pmIn week one, you’ll learn about the science of erections, how treatment fits in, and the role of mindfulness in the sexual response cycle.
Week 2: Tuesday, April 30 2024, 7:30-9:00 pmIn week two, you’ll get to know how cognitive behavioural therapy can help with treating situational erectile dysfunction. The facilitators will provide accurate sex-education and bust common myths about erectile dysfunction.
Week 3: Tuesday, May 7 2024, 7:30-9:00 pmIn week three, you’ll learn about common styles of thinking that are associated with situational erectile dysfunction. The facilitators will teach you about the benefits of following a non-goal directed approach to sex and will provide you with examples of what this can look like in practice.
Week 4: Tuesday, May 14 2024, 7:30-9:00 pmIn week four, you’ll be invited to explore what makes sex good. The facilitators will identify new and old beliefs about male sexuality, as individuals and partners in intimate relationships.
Week 5: Tuesday, May 21, 2023, 7:30-9:00 pmIn week five, we’ll shift focus on to applying mindfulness beyond the group setting. The facilitators will equip you with additional resources and help you develop a game plan for ongoing practice.
