Unlocking Growth: The Benefits of Psychotherapy for Older Teens (17+)
Psychotherapy, like talk therapy and mindfulness, for older teens can be really supportive when tackling challenges like stress and anxiety. Discover Sophia’s unique approach to therapy with those on the cusp of adulthood!
Sophia obtained her Masters in Theology with a specialization in Spiritual Care and Psychotherapy at Wilfrid Laurier University. She also has a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from York University and a Child & Youth Work diploma from Sheridan College. As teens move through various stages of their life they are met with many challenges and stuck points which can lead to feelings of stress, anxiety, and depression, among other distressing feelings.
Psychotherapy can help clients in strengthening the ways in which they navigate the rough waters of getting older.
What exactly can psychotherapy do for me?There are several approaches that I take with teen clients which include talk therapy, mindfulness exercises, and creative arts therapies. I sometimes will use a white board and choose from several therapeutic games that I have in the office for times that we want to make things a little more fun.
I recognize that at times, it can be difficult to find a safe space when it comes to opening up about certain topics. I try my best to make therapy sessions a safe space for clients to only talk about what they feel comfortable talking about. I never push them to share anything they’re not ready to! The therapy space is all about you feeling empowered to be your authentic self, without the fear of judgment or pressure.
What can we talk about?Anything! 🙂 We can explore your thoughts and feelings about your friends, family, school, life after graduation, questions you have about mental health, and more. One of the beauties of psychotherapy is its flexibility to address a wide range of issues that may be coming up!
Here’s a list of topics that teens usually bring up in sessions with me:
- Stress + anxiety
- Building healthy relationships
- Learning how to manage worry thoughts and social anxiety
- Getting help with scheduling / time management
- Exploring interests for fun or relating to career planning
- Coping with trauma or a loss
- Sexuality and identity / 2S LGBTQIA+ topics.
As you are entering into young adulthood, know that you don’t have to do do it alone. Psychotherapy offers a lifeline, a safe harbour where you can find outside support and guidance. Together, we’ll chart a course towards a future where you can embrace your true self and thrive!
