How to Choose a Therapist in Waterloo or Milton: Questions to Ask in Your Free Consultation | Bliss Counselling
Finding the right therapist in Waterloo, Milton, or anywhere in Ontario starts with the right questions. Here’s what to ask during your free consultation, and how to know it’s a good fit
Finding a therapist in Waterloo, Milton, or anywhere across Ontario can feel overwhelming; especially with so many practitioners, modalities, and specialties to sort through. One of the most useful things you can do before committing to ongoing sessions is book a free consultation and come prepared with the right questions.
Most consultations are short, so you won’t get through every question below. Pick the ones that matter most to you, and add your own based on what you’re looking for, whether that’s a specific presenting issue, a particular therapeutic approach, or simply a sense of whether you’ll be able to be open and honest with this person.
Many of these answers may already be listed in a therapist’s online bio. It’s worth reading through a few practitioner profiles first; for Bliss Counselling + Psychotherapy therapists in Waterloo and Milton, bios are listed on our team pages, so your free consultation time goes further.
Questions to Ask About Their Background and Approach- Where did you go to school, and what did you study?
- How long have you been in private practice?
- Do you specialize in my presenting issue(s), and how so?
- Have you supported others with similar concerns, and what were the general outcomes?
- What kind of treatment approach would you use with me?
- How important will it be for you to know about my past, my family of origin, or my relationships?
- Who does more of the talking — you or me?
- Do you see yourself as the expert in our sessions, or more of a co-collaborator?
- How would you describe your therapeutic style?
- Will you give me homework or between-session assignments?
- Have you personally experienced the challenges I’m facing, and how do you think that affects our work together?
- Based on my goals, how often should I plan to see you, and when do you expect I’ll reach them?
- How much does each session cost, when is payment due, and what happens if I miss a payment?
- Are your credentials covered by my extended health insurance, and do you offer direct billing?
- What’s your cancellation policy, and how do I reschedule?
- How will I know if we’re making progress?
- Do you think I’d be a good fit for your practice?
- If not, can you point me toward other referrals?
Most of the health professions are still disproportionately made up of people who hold significant privilege and social advantage. If you experience discrimination based on race, Indigeneity, gender, sexuality, disability, neurodiversity, or any other part of your identity, it’s worth asking directly whether a therapist is equipped to understand and support your specific experience:
- Have you worked with someone with my identity or cultural background before? What has that experience taught you?
- What ongoing learning have you done around my identity or cultural experience?
- Are you aware of the current political and social issues affecting people like me?
- Do you consider your practice trauma-informed and anti-oppressive? In what way?
- Would you be comfortable if I discussed discrimination I’ve experienced from people you may share an identity or association with?
- Do you receive consultation or supervision from others who share my cultural background or identity? If not, why?
You can also verify a practitioner’s registration status and standing directly through the CRPO public register (for Registered Psychotherapists) or the OCSWSSW public register (for Registered Social Workers) before your consultation.
How Do I Know If a Therapist Is a Good Fit?Therapeutic fit matters…research consistently shows that a strong rapport between therapist and client is one of the biggest predictors of positive treatment outcomes.
If it’s your first time seeking therapy, take advantage of free consultations, book them with two or three therapists so you have something to compare, at no cost to you. After each one, sit with these questions:
- Will I feel safe being vulnerable and authentic with this person?
- Can I see myself building trust with them?
- Am I comfortable with their communication style and body language?
- Were there moments I felt seen, heard, or understood?
- Could I understand them clearly, and did they understand me?
- Do I want to keep talking to them?
- Does this person feel like an ally or teammate?
- Does their availability realistically fit my schedule and goals?
- Is it easy to book, reschedule, or pay for sessions with them?
“One of the most common things I hear from clients is that they wish they’d asked more questions before starting therapy. A consultation isn’t just the therapist evaluating you — it’s just as much you evaluating them. The right fit makes the work faster and more honest.” — Kelly McDonnell, MA, MBA, RSW, RP, Founder, Bliss Counselling + Psychotherapy
If most of your answers point to “no,” or something just feels off, it’s worth continuing to meet with other therapists. Some nervousness in early sessions is normal and often takes the first two to three sessions to settle as rapport builds — that’s different from a sense that something isn’t a fit.
What Happens NextIf the therapist you want has a waitlist, ask during your free consultation how long you can expect to wait. From there you can decide whether to hold a spot or ask for referrals to therapists with more immediate availability.
Once you’ve found the right fit and they have space for you, it’s common to book your first three or four sessions at once, especially if schedules are filling up. Most practices, including Bliss, allow you to reschedule or cancel individual sessions later per their cancellation policy, so booking ahead doesn’t lock you in.
Before your first session, you may be asked to review a General Treatment Contract, complete an intake form or assessment, or read through instructions for virtual sessions. Reviewing these ahead of time helps you walk in prepared and can save administrative time in session one.
